How do wounds heal?

Wound healing starts as blood clots come into contact with the air, sealing the wound.  If the outer surface of the wound is allowed to dry out a scab will form.

The damaged tissues release chemicals instructing the body to start the healing process.  The injury may become inflamed.  This is a normal reaction and a natural defence to the injury.  Inflamation also leads to the formation of a clear, yellow fluid called exudate which helps the healing process.  Exudate keeps the wound moist and provides skin cells with concentrated nutrients.  As the wound begins to bind together new blood vessels develop.  New epithelial cells are formed and commence the healing from the edges of the wound.  Once the wound has a new layer of  skin, any scab will come away, sometimes leaving scarring.

To aid wound healing you can use Vetalintex Sterile Wound Hydrogel and Activate, an activated carbon wound dressing.  For more information on both these items click here
